This page deals with Red Line (RedLine; Redline) brand oils

Introduction

Red Line offers fantastic lubricants, but at higher prices. You can expect to spend 3-10x as much on Red Line products than on other brands. However, you get what you pay for with some fantastic out-of-the-box lubrication.

Red Line "Full Synthetic Blue Label" out performed its more expensive "Race" rival, as well as every other oil tested so far. However, it did this with one caveat, and that was higher initial temperatures. Until about the 45 minute mark of running, higher heats (300'F+) were observed, in comparison to the "Race" blend, and the base oil produced noticeable oil smoke until temperatures reduced. That is the only negative this oil received, and the temperatures were still lower than other poorer oils.

The fact that this oil was able to outperform its "Race" blend counterpart adds further argument against high ZnDDP levels. While this oil does contain ZnDDP, Red Line suggests that it's about half the amount contained in the "Race" blend. It is worth noting that the "Race" oil was able to provide slightly cooler temperatures overall in comparison, but both are outstanding.

The most notable SQUID INK blends, as well as the standard "M1" are displayed in the charts below. While we did attempt to create new blends for this oil, there is very little room for improvement over the blends that were already available. The highest scoring was M8, with a very close second going to M19, the blend developed for Red Line "Race" (results for that oil available in the following section). M8 has the best long-term protection, while M19 was able to offer more immediate protection, but was outperformed by M8 at the 120-minute mark. A suggestion then would be to use M8 for vehicles that see shorter bursts of performance driving (street vehicles, auto-x, togue), while M19 would be more beneficial for longer durations of stress (endurance racing, circuit racing). However, in reality either blend would be phenomenal in either situation. Both blends have come very close to a perfect "100" score.

Red Line RACE 15W50 weighs 0.8544 grams per milliliter, making it nearly 7% heavier than most other 50 weight oils.

Red Line RACE 15W50 produced very little scaring as standard, yet still every SQUID INK blend was able to provide noticeable improvements in scaring. The most notable results were taken from the currently available blends (such as M1, M2, M11, and M15) which were then used to create a new specialized blend designed specifically for this base oil -- M19. The main goal of the new blend (M19) was temperature and required power reduction, as scaring was already minimal. Not only were temperatures significantly reduced (285.4' F N/A down to 230.4' F with M19, a reduction of nearly 20%), but scar size was also reduced by over 25%, and the required power differential reduced by over 5%.

It is worth noting that this oil has a fair amount of ZnDDP added and SHOULD NEVER BE USED in a vehicle with a catalytic converter! This is a RACE ONLY oil!
