Pennzoil Start Stop Protection (SSP) offered fair performance, but surprisingly poor loaded start protection despite it's apparent specialization in that category. Fair temperatures, power, and cylinder wear puts this oil in the average performance bracket.

Recommended blend: M12

SLR Scoring ---

  • M7: 88.00
  • M12: 89.90

Pennzoil Hybrid 0W16 is the lightest weight oil tested, but still provided good results. If your vehicle requires low weight oils (this is more popular in modern Toyota engines), you can rest assured that this oil provides good wear protection with a base N/A (no additive) score of 77.82.

This oil has a strong film strength and provided good start/stop protection -- this is a common requirement with hybrid oils, as many engines will shut off when stopped, and only run when batteries/motors are not enough to propel the vehicle at the requested torque.

The four best performing additives are shown in the graph below (M4, M7, M11, and M12). M12 provided the best wear protection and heat mitigation, resulting in a respectable score of 90.80.
